"Ten years later, the re-release of this fabulous Matt Elliott record seemed essential as it was eagerly awaited! It is undoubtedly the most dramatic continuation of the Songs trilogy, characterised by its darkness, from which he gradually turned away. The "Songs" trilogy is over and MATT ELLIOTT not only opens a new chapter with "The Broken Man", but also presents his most filigree album yet. The angry noise gives way to fragile melodies and a more subtle intensity that washes over the listener. Ideally, the album is listened to in complete darkness, to hear the hope that lies deep within the guitars, the voice, the choirs, bells and heavenly trumpets, and the earnestness of the music. Inspired by the spirit of European folk, ELLIOT's voice is often resigned yet always expressive. ELLIOTT teamed up with Katia Labeque for ,'If Anyone Ever Tells Me That it is Better to Have Loved and Lost Than to Have Never Loved At All I Will Stab Them in the Face", who is instrumental on the album's centrepiece. "Dust Flesh And Bones", another epic track on this album, is perhaps ELLIOTT's most beautiful and touching piece, remaining simple in form but emotionally profound. The Pain That's Yet To Come" shows a new psychedelic direction. The Broken Man" opens up to the listener over several listens; each time it goes further into the depths until an emotional panorama unfolds. Every single song is an invitation to follow the descent of a man and to reflect on the frustration and sadness that grips us all from time to time. Mixed by YANN TIERSEN, "The Broken Man" bridges the gap between the acoustic material of "Songs" and the electronics of THIRD EYE FOUNDATION."
