YELLOW feels exactly like what we've been craving for the last 12 months: a transcendent, human, shared experience. The work draws glowing lines between 70s jazz fusion, p-funk, the cosmic evocations of Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane and the grand orchestration of the Beach Boys. Her 2020 EPs UM YANG and RAIN DANCE made EMMA-JEAN THACKRAY a pioneer of a spiritually-influenced, dance-floor interpretation of jazz that set her apart from the wider UK scene. The album sounds like another step into a space of its own, with 14 tracks blossoming with horns and strings, choral segments and ecstatic vocals. The artist has generally been in demand over the past 12 months, providing horns for Squid debut Bright Green Field and Pinty radio hit Comfort Me, being part of the Blue Note RE:imagined album alongside Shabaka Hutchings, Ezra Collective and Nubya Garcia, and hosting her monthly show on Worldwide FM.
