Trophies ist ein Projekt, das 2009 von Alessandro Bosetti gegründet wurde, anlässlich seiner damaligen Rolle als Resident Artist des Teatro Fondamente Nuevo in Venedig. Damals noch mit Ches Smith am Schlagzeug hat sich inzwischen die Besetzung mit Kenta Nagai an der Fretless-Gitarre und Tony Buck am Schlagzeug herauskristallisiert.

Ihrer Musik liegen die Sprache und repetitive Strukturen. Aus den Sprachloops Bosettis lassen sie pulsierende, unmetrische Rhythmen und Melodien, die nicht einer traditionell musikalischer Logik zu entspringen scheinen.

Ein Sprachfragment wird zu einem musikalischen Loop, dank dessen ständige Repetition die kleinste Verschiebung in Rhythmus, Intonation und Tonfall zu einem musikalischen Ereignis wird. Geduldig und unaufhaltsam lassen die drei Musiker die dadurch erzeugte Energie wachsen. Aus der Wiederholung eines kurzen Sprachfragment wird so eine vernichtendes Bühnenmonster heraus gezaubert.

MIR muss man in Basel wohl nicht gross vorstellen: Daniel Buess, Papiro und Michael Zaugg sind alle feste Bestandteile des interessanteren Teils der Basler Musikszene. Vor allem in Kollaboration unter dem Namen MIR sind sie nicht mehr wegzudenken aus Basel. Dabei bleiben sie mit ihrer Musik so weit entfernt von der ursprünglichen Bedeutung von MIR (russische für „Frieden, Stille“). Irgendwo zwischen Noise, Drone, Hardcore, etc. anzusiedeln, haben sie schon die unterschiedlichsten Teile der Welt beglückt: Japan, Russland, Polen, etc. Schön, auch sie wieder einmal in Basel sehen zu können.

Trophies is a project founded by Alessandro Bosetti in 2009 while he was an artist in residence of Teatro Fondamente Nuevo in Venice. Once a collaboration with drummer Ches Smith, Bosetti’s project then crystallized into a trio with fret-guitarist Kenta Nagai and Tony Buck on drums, working in a language of repetition. Bosetti’s voice-loops are shaped into pulsating, un-metrical rhythms and melodies that defy the traditional logic of music. A Speech fragment becomes a musical loop through continuous repetitions with microscopic transitions in rhythm and intonation, building up into a musical event. Calmly and inexorably, the three musicians step back and let the energy grow, thus creating out of a short speech fragment a huge, monstrous stage-act.

MIR are well known in Basel’s music scene. Daniel Buess, Papiro and Michael Zaugg are the trio’s creative block. While firmly rooted in the city, their sound is far from what their Russian name implies (peace and quiet), settled somewhere between noise, drone, and hardcore. Together they have toured in Japan, Russia, Poland and many other countries in the world. Its good to have them back in Basel!
